How to fill it in
Two weekly cards to a page, so a two-week pay period fits on one sheet. Write which day your employer’s workweek starts: overtime is counted per workweek, and that day decides where each shift lands (DOL).
- Each shift: the day and date, clock-in, the break, clock-out.
- Hours for the day: clock-out minus clock-in minus the break. In decimals, 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75.
- At the bottom: total hours, then up to 40 as regular and the rest as overtime.
- Tips in their own columns, if you get them, so the card doubles as a check on your paycheck.
The overtime line
A week of 47 hours has 7 hours of overtime. On the federal tipped wage of $2.13, those hours pay at least $5.76 each, because overtime is figured on the full minimum wage less the tip credit, not on the cash wage (DOL Fact Sheet #15). That’s $40.32 for the week’s overtime, $125.52 in wages in all. California also counts overtime past 8 hours in a day (Labor Commissioner).
The time card calculator does this sum with your state’s rules, and overtime with tips explains it line by line.
Or let the app keep it
PayJar is the same card in your pocket: tap in, tap out, and it adds up the workweek as you go, overtime past 40 and your state’s daily rule included.
